*******Sunday, February 2, 2003 ZITI DINNER******** The Diplomat is booked and mark the date down today for our 26th Annual Ziti Dinner and largest fundraiser. All Rotarians are required to work that day and spouses, guests and friends are welcome to pitch in as well. Ziti will be held the weekend of the Pro Bowl game, as there is no playoffs bye week this year.
Tom Shay is this year’s chairperson and he is currently forming his committee. Look for tickets and posters soon.
Announcements: Liz Richardson reported that to date, Greece Rotary’s pledge of $18,000 to the Polio Eradication Campaign (PEC) leads the district in overall pledges. Kim Putnam will be sending our first payment of $6,000 to the district soon. Please see Kim for PEC individual contribution brochures. Special Appeal: The Hilton Apple Fest is the weekend of October 5th and 6th and Hilton Rotary staffs a food both at this event. They are short of volunteers and are asking if any Greece Rotarians would be interested in helping them out. If so, please contact Annie Forberg at 392-6096. They would really appreciate any and all help.
Fining with Paul: The meeting actually opened with fines because 12 members (whether they are angry men or not depends on how their rounds totaled) left for the club golf tournament)
Club Assembly: Monday, Sept. 16 was the board meeting. In addition to the many items already reported, President Bill reported on the following: The current checking account balance is approximately $28,000and the club’s total assets are $59,415.
A major topic of discussion is the rising costs of the New Teacher’s Luncheon. President Bill will be setting time aside at the next few weekly meetings for an open forum on how we address this issue. The club is unique in its offering of this long term event but must consider the skyrocketing costs associated with hosting the luncheon. Please think about how we can effectively address this issue. Some suggestions already made include: sharing the cost with the school district or to continue to pay for the new teachers and only one administrative delegate from each school (other administrators would pick up their own tab). Your thoughts and comments are most appreciated. This year we paid for 180 guests. Greece Central has been dealing with a huge exodus of teachers due to retirement and attrition and while the trend is due to slow down, the club still needs to explore the cost issue. Club Service: see clambake date and ziti dinner date.
Community Service: need for increased public relations on club activities. Tracy Wooden to coordinate with Rosa Smith-Montanaro and Liz Richardson. International Service: Our exchange student, Carlotta is here, and going through some painful adjustments: homesickness, culture challenges and others. President Bill made an appeal to the club to consider including Carlotta on family excursions and other ways to help enrich Carlotta’s exchange experience. Carlotta’s particular interests include: going to the movies, bowling and SHOPPING.
Vocational Service: An Interact Club may be returning to Odyssey. Two teachers present at the New Teacher’s Luncheon have expressed an interest in coordinating an Odyssey Club. Colleen Meger reported that there are nine returning club members from last year at Arcadia who are ready to go. Athena and Northwood Elementary are also exploring the possibility of a club at their prospective schools. The Interact students will be joining us at a luncheon soon. 50/50: Kim Putnam
