Today’s program Today’s special guest and speaker was Jason Crane the station manager for WGMC radio. WGMC is one of five 24/7 jazz radio stations in the country. It is also 1 of two housed in a school district. WGMC operates out of the former Nun’s Kitchen at the Cardinal Mooney high school which is now Greece Apollo High School.
The station began 30 years ago. Our own, Al Meilutis, hosts a Polka Bandstand show on weekends which maybe the longest running show on Rochester airwaves.
Jason told the club that since jazz is not well understood and that the countries artists produce approximately 1800 records per year, that the only way they get heard is via the small number of radio station, but more important to their careers are the jazz clubs. Jazz artist must perform to survive. The radio station supports local artist extensively. They play local artist songs as well as nationally recognized artists.
WGMC also has an extensive internet presence and has listeners from all over the world. To listen to the internet go to http://www.wgmc.org/listen.htm
WGMC is undergoing a capital fundraising campaign to raise money to increase the wattage from 2000 to 15,000. This expansion will allow the station to reach more consistently all of the county. This fundraising activity involves no government money. The space from Greece School district is donated. Listeners support 85% of the budget. Businesses support the other 15%.
The radio station is located @ 90.1 on the FM dial.
