Today’s Program Jim Lawrence Editor for the D&C newspaper. Jim started his discussion today by reviewing the scandal at the NY Times. The scandal involved the plagiarism of stories by one of its writers. Jim stated that the author had over 50 corrections in the last 2 years. This would not happen here in Rochester. The D&C has systems in effect that enhance credibility. These actions include the sources of all articles are know by the editor & Managing editor. The newsroom has an accuracy committee to enforce standards. When an error occurs the author is asked to make the correction and state how it can be corrected so it doesn’t occur in the future.
Jim then turned to tell the club about the editorial page. He believes the page is the “Soul “of the newspaper. The editorial board meets daily to discuss topics to come up with idea. These ideas are either in the news or are community events. Jim does not fell the board is liberal / conservative. The board consists of the 8 most senior people at the paper. They have an average of 25+ years of working for the news.
The community “Speaking Out Page” is the community’s page. Jim pointed out that there are no advertisements on the page. This is not the case with out papers. The paper receives over 12,000 letters per year.
