Today’s Guest Speakers: Dan Barletta provided his “presidential remarks” as he begins his term - Thanked Rich Vogelzang for his year as president. - Theme for this year is “Rotary Shares”, with emphasis on water, health, hunger and literacy. - Linda Blossom and Liz Richardson both on district level committees. - We need to develop/mentor a new generation - we will have emphasis in upcoming months. - Just about every member has been asked to participate with a committee.
Dan’s full text of remarks: Let‘s begin by first thanking President Rich for his excellent service to the club last year. I would like to also thank the club for allowing me the opportunity to serve them as the club president.
Today, we begin a journey for the next year.
As many of you already know, ROTARY INTERNATIONAL’s theme for the year is: ”Rotary Shares.” ROTARY INTERNATIONAL President Wilfred Wilkinson has stated, “This theme will act as a daily reminder of what ordinary people can accomplish through the extraordinary work of Rotary.” “Almost everything Rotary does, involves sharing. We share our time, we share our talents and we share our money with others who need our help. In Rotary, sharing doesn’t mean giving away what you have to spare, what you don’t need for yourself. Sharing means; giving of yourself for the good of others.”
Furthermore, the RI wants to continue the focus of previous years of emphasizing Rotary’s work with Water, Health and Hunger, and Literacy.
During my tenure as President, I would like to focus on the goal of making our club an effective club in pursuit of the Object of Rotary. An effective club achieves the Object of Rotary by:
With these thoughts in mind let me share with you how I feel we can achieve these goals.
During my term, I would like to see us explore and learn what each member young or old in club tenure has to share with our club. I’d like to see our newer members step up and learn from the older members, whom have been shouldering the club’s efforts for many years. In doing so, we will develop a new generation of members who can in the future lead the excellent work of this club.
To this extent, I have been working with the chairpersons of the many varied committees that club has to seek members, who with mentoring, we can give some wings to. It is only through this method that the new member can learn to take on more responsibility and develop leadership skills. We must be confident in this mentoring process. As another aspect of this mentoring process, I will ask the members of the club’s board of directors to provide support to each individual new member on a one to one basis. Through the new member’s sponsor or the board member dedicated to his mentoring, the new member will be called to invite him/her to join the other members of the club in the different activities through out the year.
A spin off of this process will be to actively engage members, old and new, in the workings of the club. In doing so, we will be able to better retain our members and thus improve our membership. Our membership will continue to grow because of this enjoyment. This enjoyable interaction should be an effective tool in demonstrating what Rotary is all about and help to encourage them to invite colleagues and friends to come check out our club, which will be an added benefit for our membership.
In our Service Project area, the club will hear in the upcoming months about a number of projects some are already planned, like our Dictionary project to be done in unison with the Hilton Rotary, to proposed projects in the International arena.
I have asked Vice President Bill Gormont to use the RI theme “Rotary Shares” as a basis for planning upcoming programs. Bill and our Rotary Foundation Chair, Will Gallagher, will plan programs that will inform the club about the workings of the Foundation. I have asked Bill to plan meetings where we might have, for example, former members of a GSE team or Rotary Alumni come and speak about their experiences. I plan on having our Public Relation Committee continue their excellent work. It is important to our club as well as ROTARY INTERNATIONAL that the projects and other works of our club get the public recognition that they deserve. This effort will help to change the perception of what our club is about and also increase public awareness of our need for new members.
Finally, in our Club Administration area, we will continue the Frivolity principle issued by current President Rich. This principle recommends that any committee meeting or club function begin with adult beverages. Our Fellowship committee will plan not only activities with the district but also within our club. These activities are needed to get our members together to have fun. As an example, in August, we will be having a three-hour cruise on the Harbortowne Belle. The cruise will also be a casino night.
A number of years ago, former President George H. Bush once stated that the United States has a thousand points for light, which represent the many who give back to their communities. I would like to say that our club has one hundred points of light. Each of us has something to share with this club and through this effort return ourselves to the community. In the course of this journey this year we will be taking these one hundred points of light and focusing them so that, in the end, we will have a “Beacon” that will light the way for many of the disadvantaged in our community
Robert Kennedy once said, “Few
will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to
change a small portion of events, and in the total; of all those acts will be
written the history of this generation.” So lets work together
to continue changing history!
