Today’s program and Speakers:

Sister Diana Dolce the founder of Hope Hall was our guest speaker today.  Hope Hall is the only school in Rochester to offer the Mastery in Learning Program© which teaches the New York State curriculum in a non-traditional way. Strategies are designed to meet the needs of students who have experienced frustration and failure in traditional classroom settings. It is an opportunity for "at-risk" or "educationally stranded" kids to become successful, lifelong learners. Content and study skills are constantly reviewed and reinforced so that students achieve high levels of mastery, not only at Hope Hall, but also in traditionally taught classes in high schools and beyond.

At Hope Hall all students experience success in both academics and in extra-curricular activities. Class size is limited to 12 students; our small setting providing a comfortable environment where teachers can easily monitor vital self-esteem signs and give extra encouragement and support when needed. Students at Hope Hall are involved in a wide range of physical activity/exercise programs designed to promote fitness. We offer no-cut team sports with opportunities for students to participate regardless of ability. The emphasis is on teamwork rather than competition.

Hope Hall offers courses in music and art. Teaching in these areas is geared to encourage experimentation, freedom of expression, imagination, and a lifelong interest in and appreciation of the arts.

Our students have access to a fully equipped, multi-service library, and can further broaden their horizons through classwork in foreign language (Spanish) and computer technology.

Hope Hall works in partnership with Junior Achievement, a program which shows our students how to apply classroom learning to real world experience.

All teachers at Hope Hall are New York State certified and along with support personnel, specially trained in Mastery in Learning© methods. The entire staff is committed to providing total quality management for Hope Hall, its students and families. Our alternative school is fully accredited and chartered by the New York State Board of Regents.

Greece Rotary Board Meeting Minutes - July 22, 2002

President’s Comments

We sent a $1,000 check to St. Joseph’s Villa, as approved at our last Board meeting.  The money will be used for the lacrosse program and other items needing funding.

Treasurer’s Report

Reviewed budget.  Changes to expense items from this year to next included 1) increasing Literacy Program Expense from $800 to $1,000; 2) hold on committing/releasing money for Town’s Children Camp until Frank Ardino gives us firm program information; 3) voted to add $1,000 commitment for both the TOPS Soccer program and the Northwest YMCA; 4) left RYLA expense in the budget even though we were not involved this year (we will send 2 high school students this year); increased expense for Teacher’s Luncheon from $1,200 to $1,800 (150 new teachers this years plus administration) with additional being taken out of Unallocated Funds; 5) voted to leave commitment for Rotary float at $100 (RI had requested $3.50/member); 6) left in the $1,000 for the Foundation Set-up Expenses (money not used this current year); dues for Camp Haccamo went up $5/member again this year, raising it to $40/member (we also give an additional $4,000 annually, which is more than any other club)

Reviewed additional information on the TOPS program.  Dave Nagel suggested putting our logo and “provided by” on the shirts for the kids.  Larry Waye has donated Truth & Grace Park for their 6-week program, on Saturdays from 9am-11am.  At the Rhinos games, Greece Rotary will be named as their sponsor when the TOPS soccer kids and coaches are introduced.

It was suggested that we contact Chuck Krause for Camp Haccamo and Gene Noga for the Greece Challenger Little League to also have our logo put on their shirts.

Reviewed additional information on the YMCA.  The Y is building a new day camp on North Greece Road, to be even better that Camp Arrowhead on the county’s eastside.  Kiwanis gave them $1,000, with only 5-6 members.  There will be a $1-2M capital campaign to finance this camp as well as $1˝ M for naming rights.  It was approved to add the $1,000 donation to our expense line.

Checking account balance as of 6/30/02 – $17,682.13.  This was a very good year for our fines line item

Club Service

Bob Potter announced that beginning at the 7/31 meeting, we would have an apparel display on a weekly basis.  Items will include items for both men and women, and will include shirts, sweaters, wind shirts, hats, etc. These items will be offered at Bob’s cost.  No profit can be made, based on RI regulations.  We will also be adding other items later in the year, such as license plate holders (suggested by Al, with the Rotary logo and Greece, NY on them and sell for $15-$20 each).

Community Service

There was no report.

International Service

Carlotta will be arriving on August 21st.  A Welcome Picnic for her is tentatively planned for Saturday, August 24th; details to follow.

Vocational Service

No report.

Old / New Business

It was suggested that the Interact members be invited to a weekly luncheon in early September to introduce the students to the Club members and present the Interact Clubs activities to our members.  We will also present each of the students with certificates of appreciation to thank them for the help and assistance over the past year.

Bill will ask Elaine Gorman to head up the RYLA committee.  We will send a graduating senior to the weeklong leadership program.  It was suggested that we look at children of club members first for selection of the student.

Etiquette at Club meeting was discussed.  The

members need to be reminded that we must show basic respect for others.  People have been holding sidebar conversations during inductions and guest speakers, which is very disrespectful.  There have also been people who leave the meeting just as the guest speaker gets up to talk.  It is strongly suggested that anyone who must leave before the guest’s presentation apologize to the speaker beforehand and leave before their talk.

Carla is trying to tie speakers into the RI theme of the month.  Please contact her with any suggestions. A new committee will be formed to work with Carla on the weekly program content and speakers.

Al and Bill both suggested that we get a PO Box for the club.  This will eliminate having to change contact and address information every year.  Del will set up the box at the Latta/Long Pond

At Dianne Berardicurti’s request, Ed D’Angelo has looked into costs for setting up a fall winery tour for our members and guests.  The tentative date will be in late September or early October, possibly tying into an event at one of the wineries.  Ed has checked prices with Golden Memories and will also check with Bob Potter’s brother for costs.  We will probably go with a 55-passenger bus, with stops at 2-3 wineries and dinner at the last one.  Attendance will be limited to members and spouses/guests, on a first-paid basis.

Dave Nagel reviewed the list of members that should be contacted for poor performance in an effort to keep them as members.  Board members were assigned to talk with each of them about their attendance and their intent to improve in order to maintain their membership.

Bob Potter is putting together a membership survey to bring in feedback on the type of programming and speakers that our members would find interesting and informative.

Next meeting on Monday, August 19, 2002, at Dan Barletta’s House.

Respectfully submitted,

Sue Edgett

Secretary

Correction for last week’s Beacon

An error has been reported to this editor in last week’s Beacon.  The following line:

Less $1000.00 a day for 3 years equals $1000.00 the cost of a Paul Harris Fellow.

The line should read as follows:

Less than $1.00 a day for 3 years equals the cost of a Paul Harris Fellow.

Sorry for the error.
