Membership Drive

Dave Nagel spoke to the club today about our membership drive for the upcoming year.  His committee would like the club to grow to about 110 members.  We are at 98 now but will be losing a few in the next couple of weeks.  The goal is 20 new members.

Dave suggested that members use the KISS method.  Use a one on one technique to get new members.  Call a quality business person and ask them to come to lunch as our guest.  Have them come to at least three meetings to check out the club and Rotary, to see if it interests them.  The sponsor would then go over the application for membership form with the now perspective members.

The membership committee will be issuing invitation business cards to the club’s members in the upcoming weeks.

The two top sponsors will receive a $50.00 gift certificate to a restaurant of their choice. & a Rotary Golf shirt from Bob Potter.

New/Old Business

Polio Plus – Liz Richardson

Liz showed a 6 minute tape from RI regarding the Polio Plus Effort.  RI expects each club to pledge $175/member.  The Greece Club would be pledging a minimum of $17,500.00.  After some discussion, the board acted to pledge $18,000 over a three year time period to The Rotary Foundation's Polio Eradication Campaign (PEC).  The first payment of $6,000 will be sent to the Foundation immediately and another $4,000 at the end of this Rotary year.  The remaining $8,000 will be paid to the Foundation before the end of the Rotary year in 2005.

This pledge represents our commitment and support of the most ambitious health campaign undertaken by a private entity.  In 1986, Rotary Int'l began it's Polio Plus campaign to support a global effort to immunize children
against polio.  Rotary Int'l set a goal of $140 million for this initial effort.  Rotarians raised $247 million.

Eradication of polio by 2005, Rotary's 100th anniversary, became Rotary's top priority.  Polio Eradication Committee Chair Kim Putnam will be sending each club member an informational brochure on the campaign along with individual pledge information.  Rotarians are encouraged to make their own contributions to this effort, if they so choose.  The Interact club, under the direction of Colleen Meger, is also planning a PEC fundraiser to help add to our initial goal.

Area 9 Dinner – Sept 21st Greece Rotary in charge of program.  ARC for Monroe County will be performing.

Interact club - May have Interact members attend a meeting to be introduced and meet members.

June 9, 2003 – Golf Tournament

October 17, 2002 Rich Vogelzang mentioned the Greece Chamber of Commerce would be having a luncheon with Congressman Tom Reynolds @ Lakeshore Country Club.  The emphasis will be introducing the Congressman to the Service Organizations in the Town of Greece.  It was highly suggested that members of Greece Rotary attend.  More information will be made available through the mail from the Chamber and at an upcoming meeting.

Club Etiquette – Bill and Tom Nolan will be working on controlling meetings better.  It no change is noted, the club may institute fines for leaving early unless the person leaving apologizes to the speaker prior to his time at the podium.

It was also mentioned that keeping to a defined schedule would help, i.e., the guest speaker for the day begins at 1:10 pm.  If other matters are not resolved, for example fining session, these matters are then postponed.

Membership –Bill, Dave and Tom Shay will be new membership campaign beginning this Sept.  Weekly reminders to the club will be performed.

Fundraising – Dan reviewed for the Board the Mission of the Fundraising committee and discussed possible fundraising activities for the club.  It was determined that the club does not need any new intensive fundraising activities at this time.  A proposal to set up a mechanism with Mike Sofia for donations of cars would have to be tabled until the club establishes a Greece Rotary Foundation.

Next meeting Monday, Sept 16, 2002 at Del Smith’s House.
