Upcoming Meeting Schedule
April 23 - Club Assembly
Today’s Program Our first speaker was Renee Ward from the 21st Century Community Learning Center. This program will serve 1,035 students and 90 community members at the district’s middle schools, where students are most at risk of educational failure. The after school and summer programs will provide academic activities that include tutoring, homework assistance, and enrichment activities.
Our second speaker was club member Will Gallagher. He began by giving a brief history of the Northwest YMCA.
The Northwest YMCA was established in 1958. The offices were located at the Greece Grange located on Ridge Road West. In 1964, a new facility was completed on Long Pond Road. There were approximately 1,500 members when the doors opened and now the Northwest branch serves over 9,000 members. A gymnasium, pool and locker rooms were added to the facility in 1970. In 1988, a fire destroyed the front section of the facility and was rebuilt later that year. The Northwest YMCA expanded between 1996 and 1997 by incorporating a Teen Center and a Wellness Center. In 2001, the Wellness Center was moved to a new 7,000 sq. foot section. The Child Watch area was also renovated in 2001. In January 2002, a Family Adventure Center was added to the facility.
He then turned his discussion to the planned development of the new Camp Northpoint on North Greece Road. Northpoint will be a three season camp. It will open this summer on a limited basis. Will discussion the sequence for the development the costs associated with each phase. The total cost will be around 2 million dollars.
Rotary Day at the Ball Game June 1st, 2003 at Frontier Field in Rochester Dear President,
By now your club has received the ticket information packet for ROTARY DAY AT THE BALL GAME.
Besides the benefits of attending that are already listed there, another major benefit to attendance was announced recently.
Two for the Price of One! Yes, two admissions for the price of one ticket. No, not to a Red Wings game. This one is even better, I think. A ticket stub to any minor league game will get you an admission to the Baseball Hall of Fame Anytime in June of 2003. What a wonderful summertime experience. Bring the kids to the Red Wings game, let them see great baseball and what Rotary is all about, run the bases with Spikes, enjoy some peanuts and crackerjacks and then take them to see the history of America’s Favorite Pastime in nearby Cooperstown. Please be sure that all your club's members know about the game. Think of the people in your community-kids, senior citizens, disabled people and your friends and family that would enjoy a day at the ball park. Wouldn't it be a shame if they missed it because you failed to tell them about it? Looking forward to seeing you all there.
